Get That Swing at Mingei International Museum

| February 25, 2013

Mingei-Roots-of-SwingAfter all, it don’t mean a thing without it.

For three consecutive Thursdays in March, Mingei International Museum will host “Roots of Swing” dance classes in collaboration with Swing in San Diego. Led by local dance instructor and organizer of Firehouse Swing, Meeshi Ravi, each two-hour class is open to all ages and will explore two styles of American popular dance from the early 20th century.

On March 7, participants will learn the Cake Walk and the Charleston. On March 14, the class will cover Swing time’s Lindy Hop and Big Apple. And on March 21, dancers will dig in to Chicago Steppin’ and Soul Line Dancing.

The best part? No dance experience is necessary! A single class runs $15, but sign up for all three classes and only pay $35. Classes go from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

If you’re nervous, just remember: It makes no difference if it’s sweet or hot. Just give that rhythm everything you’ve got.

Celebrating the 21st of the Month at Cafe 21

| February 21, 2013

Cafe-21-sangriaCafe 21 in Downtown and University Heights celebrates the 21st of every month with–wait for it–sangrias for 21 cents from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.! While, yes, you’re only allowed to purchase one glass of sangria at this generous price, we’re talking two dimes and a penny. I mean, you’d get 4 cents in change if you paid with a quarter. Check any lament over the limit at the door.

There are six daily flavors. All-natural. Home-made. To taste each one, make a date with five friends who will agree to buy a different flavor. Then rotate glasses around the table clockwise or counterclockwise–your choice. Granted, sipping from each other’s glasses is risky business in light of all of the illness going around. But maybe the alcohol will kill the germ while the fresh fruit will boost the immune system with Vitamin C. Or maybe you’ll end up sick if you don’t choose the friends you invite to this outing carefully. I said “risk,” didn’t I?

El Dorado Cocktails with Soda & Swine Bites

| February 20, 2013

Shake off winter at El Dorado Cocktail Lounge when they host their spring menu release party this Tuesday, March 19, from 9:00 p.m. to close. And, if I were you, I’d take this opportunity to try something other than their Moscow Mule.

Free appetizers from Soda & Swine, the latest “x” on North Park’s food treasure map, will be provided to those who venture out on this week night. By the by: Soda & Swine is co-owned by El Dorado’s own Nate Stanton.

While you swig and snack, enjoy a live jazz guitar performance from San-Diegan-by-way-of-the-Philippines Harley Magsino and beats from resident DJ V-Rock.

The featured Spring cocktails are $5 all night long. So, as El Dorado’s event poster suggests, be there like a buffalo frolicking in a field with a lamb, or be square.
